Listen: James Agee and Morten Lauridsen

If you’ve been here awhile you may recognize Lauridsen’s name–he’s responsible for some beauty we listened to together last fall, a wonderful setting of O Magnum Mysterium.

James Agee was an American novelist and poet, among other things. I first became aware of his work in college, by way of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. The poem that forms the text of today’s song was first published in a 1934 volume titled, Permit Me Voyage. You decide whether you want to hear it or read it first. Whichever you decide, I think you’ll find that the music is worth savoring.

Sure On This Shining Night

Sure on this shining night
Of star made shadows round,
Kindness must watch for me
This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
High summer holds the earth.
Hearts all whole.
Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder wand’ring far
Of shadows on the stars.

    • This looks great–thanks for bringing it to my attention! And even though a few years after the actual events, I hope another “congratulations” on your awards won’t be unwelcome.
